Oakland Engagement Session: Terry & Julia
Terry proposed to Julia at the same place they met just a few years before. She planned the proposal for nearly a year! She asked Julia’s friends from different phases in her life to attend to signify that they would all be joining the two on the rest of their journey as a couple with them. Julia’s parents attended from New Hampshire and her best friend since she was four years old flew in from Los Angeles.
Julia had no idea. Terry even asked everyone to dress up in the silliest outfits because she was convinced that Julia wouldn’t notice. The attendees weren’t as convinced but Terry insisted. Terry’s little sister wore a bright, neon purple wig while Julia’s dad wore an enormous afro and her best friend wore a full ski outfit including goggles. All 21 of them sat at tables around the planned proposal spot, just five to 10 feet away from Julia and, as Terry suspected, she didn’t notice a thing.
Julia and Terry sat down at a table surrounded by their loved ones that was meticulously staged by a few of their best friends. They set up the chairs, a mic under the table and several cameras around the scene. Two friends were purposely known to Julia to keep her attention on them and also to help make sure things went smoothly. They all took a seat around the same table, outside the saloon where the couple shared their first beer and conversation.
Terry hired a guitar and cello duo (Julia is a guitarist and Terry was a classically trained cellist as a kid) to play a couple of songs that the two joked were “their songs”. The musicians posed as buskers. As planned, Julia recognized the last song and all of their loved ones braced themselves for the question. Terry held out the ring and immediately started crying, prompting Julia to do the same. Julia put the ring on. They got up to kiss then Terry turned around and unveiled to Julia that their closest family and friends were there to share the this pivotal moment with them. That’s when Terry realized she never asked Julia because she was crying. So, she asked while the guests were all standing in front of them.
Their engagement session celebrated many of Terry and Julia’s favorite things. Their photographer wanted to celebrate the couple’s business, a local eatery and queer space in downtown Oakland, and their contributions to the region.
During their session, they visited their favorite coffee shop and spots special to the couple, including the site of that monumental proposal. The day passed with smiles and fun, as Terry and Julia played and loved, and demonstrated what a beautiful couple they truly are.
