Surprise Proposal in Venice, Italy: Kat & Denise

Aug. 17, 2016

Kat and Denise are both originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and, in true California fashion, met while they were both working at In-N-Out Burger. At first, Kat didn’t like Denise at all. She was a little too energetic, a little too bossy and a little too playful for Kat’s serious self to handle while they flipped burgers for hours on end. Years later, the two were engaged after a surprise proposal in Italy.

As they started to get to know each other, though, Denise surprised Kat with her attention to detail, thoughtful personality and constantly positive attitude. Once they realized how well they balanced each other, and how much they could make each other laugh, there was no turning back. They stayed by each other’s side from undergrad through law school, through good times and bad, from burgers to dream jobs. They both feel so lucky to be marrying their best friend.

Denise knew she wanted to propose on the couple’s trip to Italy, and it was important to her that the moment be captured beautifully and artistically (i.e. not on an iPhone). She searched many photographers’ portfolios and contacted Serena to discuss proposal ideas.

She knew a storm was expected to hit Venice the day she was going to propose, so the entire trip she kept downloading new weather apps to track the storm. When they arrived in Venice, they had a bit of a setback. They took a waterbus to the wrong side of the island and spent hours crossing canals with their luggage looking for their hotel with no luck. Denise secretly contacted Serena to ask for help. Serena responded with a map from their location to their hotel. They were so exhausted, they decided to rest before heading out for what Denise told Kat would be a relaxing dinner.

As they were getting ready for dinner, Denise could feel herself getting nervously excited. They left the hotel a little later than planned and made their way to the bridge where Serena was set to meet them. Serena and Denise planned that the couple would take a selfie on the bridge, which would be her cue that it was proposal time.

Kat and Denise took their selfie, Serena approached, and Denise froze! Serena had to repeat herself a couple of times before Denise snapped back into it. At that moment, Denise got down on one knee and asked the love of her life to spend the rest of their lives together.

Almost as soon as Kat said yes, the storm hit. They could see the clouds moving in quickly, so they introduced themselves to Serena and got right to the shoot. Kat was in total shock. Shortly after their shoot, the rain started to come down hard, and they eventually ended up taking shelter in a bar where they grabbed cappuccinos before calling it a night. They were drenched from the rain, but couldn’t stop laughing at the entire experience. When the storm cleared, Serena called them a water taxi and captured the end of the most memorable night of their lives.
