20th Anniversary Underwater Vow Renewal: Ed & Denny
Feb. 4, 2016
Ed and Denny were friends, then roommates at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In their last semester, feelings for each other started rising to the surface. One very stressful night during midterms, Denny broke down and shared with Ed how he feared their friendship would fade after leaving college. They talked for a while, and Ed reassured Denny that they would remain close no matter what. At the end of the conversation they hugged – they didn’t let go for over three hours and the rest is history.
Twenty years after that most wonderful night, the guys were in Puerto Rico on vacation, and their friend suggested they renew their vows underwater for their anniversary. Not coincidentally, their friend is the owner of a Puerto Rico destination wedding company and also is an officiant. They thought about her suggestion for about two seconds then agreed wholeheartedly.
Planning was therefore “quick and dirty.” Renewing their vows was a spontaneous decision, so they had all of two days to pull everything together. Their dive master was a photographer, they had the officiant and two friends were with them to act as witnesses. They purchased matching rash guards and swim trunks, searched high and low for bow ties and garters (they ultimately improvised) and made sure there was champagne. Details in place, they were ready to renew!
Ed and Denny thought getting ready on the beach was very cool. Strangers approached them and asked what they were doing. Once they told them, the strangers got all excited and wanted pictures with the couple. They wished them well and congratulated them. The experience was very special. Their favorite memory of the day, however, was “taking the plunge” off of the docks.
Asked if they have any advice for other engaged or renewing couples, Ed and Denny replied, “Just love each other!”
