Arkansas Church Wedding and Backyard Reception: Liz & Allison
Although Allison is usually the Type A personality who plans everything, Liz went out of her comfort zone to plan the proposal. She crafted a day-long scavenger hunt that featured people nearest and dearest to Allison. The hunt, of course, ended with Liz on one knee in the studio where they first met. Afterward, there was a huge celebration with family and friends.
The ceremony was held in the church where both Allison and Liz are members. The church community is like their second family, and the historical sanctuary is incredibly beautiful. They couldn’t have imagined having their ceremony anywhere else.
The reception was held at the historic home of their good friend Todd Sweeden. The original builder of the home was responsible for Arkansas Tech, which is both Kate and Allison’s alma mater. Allison loved its atmosphere of southern antiquity and both loved that it was steeped in tradition.
Living in rural Arkansas, it was important to Liz and Allison to use vendors who they felt comfortable asking to be part of their day. They found that their community embraced them as a whole. They registered, planned and booked just like any other couple, and were incredibly grateful for that.
Liz’s suit was part of the Ed by Ellen line. Like many lesbians in their upper 20s, Ellen Degeneres has been an inspiration to her for most of her life. Allison sewed her own veil. She always dreamed of making her own dress, but being busy as a music teacher, that wasn’t practical. However, making her veil gave it that touch of ownership.
Liz and Allison had a lot of great advice to share, including, “While the ceremony is all about you, remember that the reception is for your guests and plan accordingly. We were too overwhelmed and excited to truly even enjoy the food/cake/drinks.”
