It’s hard being equal parts self-described thug and unapologetic hippie. So, when you meet someone else whose love of West Coast rap is only rivaled by their concern for the environment, something inevitably clicks. For Dinah and Malila, it was a fortuitous meeting at a mutual friend’s DJ gig in Oakland, California in 2012.

Although the women had seen each other around Oakland many times before, it was this meeting, which found Malila’s friend pouring out liquor when a Tupac song played, and Dinah’s discovery that Malila drove a Prius, that solidified their relationship.

Dinah proposed to Malila while on a Valentine’s Day weekend getaway trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2014. The original plan was to stage the proposal on a hot air balloon ride, but the weather conditions postponed the ride to the next day. The thought of  waiting another day nearly killed Dinah, so she sprung the question as the two went to sleep. They celebrated with champagne on a private balloon ride early the next morning.

A month later, Malila proposed to Dinah with a private home movie that captured their amazing ride together, and popped the question at the end.

Dinah’s favorite moment from their wedding: Seeing my wife walk down the aisle—words couldn’t describe how breathtaking she looked. A close second was seeing the house transformed into such a magical space and hugging all the special people near my heart that made it out from all over the country.

Malila’s favorite moment from their wedding: Walking down the aisle arm-in-arm with my father, and, one-by-one, seeing the smiling and teary-eyed faces of our family and close friends. Finally, seeing Dinah awaiting me beneath the orchid-draped arch and the loving look in her eyes.

Dinah and Malila’s advice for other couples is to make your wedding day special to you.

“Don’t worry about tradition or expectations; just do what best represents your own love story, exactly how you want to tell it,” the couple said.
