Harvard Square Wedding: Sophia & Mellisha

Darlene DeVita Photography F

On a beautiful July evening in the heart of Harvard Square, Sophia and Mellisha got married in front of the family and friends who had supported their relationship all along. It was July 17, 2010, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

After a church ceremony, guests headed to their reception venue, UpStairs on the Square. It’s a Harvard Square landmark that’s known not just as an event venue, but also as a terrific restaurant with a creative cocktail menu. The brides transported their theme of Alice in Wonderland seamlessly into the space.

The brides took their time, over the course of a year-long engagement, to plan their Harvard Square wedding. They knew they absolutely wanted it to be a small gathering of the people they love, in a warm, familiar space with glowing light, good music, and lots of laughs. It was a huge priority of theirs that every guest have a great time. The two women created much of their wedding by hand, hoping to give the day a homemade, down to earth feeling. They designed and produced much of their stationery, including their programs and place cards. For their favors, they chose to gift each guest a little taste of one of their favorite things: looseleaf peppermint tea, which they distributed in mini mason jars. The jars were labelled with the brides’ initials and wedding date, and were adorned with a hand-made tag that said, “Drink Me.”
