Iowa Winery Wedding: Giovana and Trisha

June 14, 2014

Giovana and Trisha tell different versions of their first meeting story. While they recall the meeting differently, they agree that Giovana was a head volleyball coach and Trisha a Physician Assistant. Their first contact surrounded Giovana’s injured player evaluated at a clinic by Trisha. They hung out several times after the meeting and have been together ever since the night of their first kiss.

Trisha proposed to Giovana while on a dinner cruise in Chicago. It was a cold night, but they walked up to the deck of the boat so they could talk and watch fireworks. After the fireworks, Trisha professed her love to Giovana and asked if she would marry her. Unfortunately, the proposal wasn’t terribly smooth. Right in the middle of the proposal, music began to blare on the boat and Giovana couldn’t hear anything Trisha said! Needless to say, eventually Giovana said yes!

When the couple chose their venue, same-sex marriage was not legal in their home state of Nebraska. They chose to go across the border into Iowa and have their wedding at Jasper Winery.

The planning experience was made much easier thanks to the brides’ wedding planner. Not living in the same state where they were planning their wedding was sometimes stressful and difficult. Providing awesome referrals, their planner made the selection of vendors much easier.

Giovana is from Brazil. Several of her family members flew in for the ceremony, and none spoke English. Her father passed away about four months before the wedding. Just before the ceremony was to start, it began to rain. The wedding planner nearly moved the ceremony indoors. Trisha’s mom and Giovana’s sister, who could not understand each other, took each other’s hands and squeezed. Giovana’s sister later told the brides that at that exact moment she looked up and prayed, asking their dad to “please do something”. The rain suddenly disappeared.

The wedding day was so wonderful, that choosing a single favorite memory was impossible. Trisha wrote, “just having so many friends and loved ones with us on our special day made the whole day our favorite memory.”

Asked for their advice to other couples, Trisha replied, “Our wedding planner made a huge difference for us, and we would strongly recommend one! Our wedding planner was also gay, so he knew vendors who were comfortable with same sex couples. Surround yourself with loved ones who support you for who you are.  No one should have to feel embarrassed or ashamed of who they are. We felt so comfortable and loved on our special day and that is what it is all about!”
