Louisiana Plantation Wedding: Kaitlin and Megan
April 5, 2014
Megan and Kaitlin met playing rugby for two different teams in the Washington DC area. During the 2012 holiday season, Kaitlin proposed with the words to a Lumineers song typed out on a vintage typewriter: “I belong to you. You belong to me. You’re my sweetheart. Will you marry me?” Surprised, Megan said yes, and Katilin gave her a beautiful engagement ring.
The brides wanted a wedding in a barn. Destrehan Plantation had the only one in the New Orleans metro area. The beautiful venue was perfect for their needs, and as a bonus, the couple found that the plantation staffers were all very nice.
A Louisiana Plantation Wedding
Planning was a little stressful at first, and again at the end, but there was about a year in between that felt very “chill”. The venue is affiliated with a caterer, and Kaitlin and Megan chose an old rugby friend to take their photographs. The music was important to the couple, so they researched local Cajun bands, deciding on one band they really liked: T’Monde. Kaitlin and Megan also engaged the services of the TBC Brass Band who they found to be amazing.
The whole night was awesome. The brides treasured the moment when the second line band started planning and everyone danced their way right into the reception. They also truly enjoyed the bus ride back to New Orleans, complete with a raucous, impromptu karaoke party!
Megan’s Favorite Memory of the Day
“The moment the brass band started playing after our ceremony was finished, and we looked at each other with the biggest smiles. It was definitely one of the happiest moments of my life.”
Kaitlin’s Favorite Memory of the Day
“Hearing Megan’s vows, which we wrote separately and didn’t share with each other, and realizing we both highlighted going on grocery store dates as one of our favorite things to do”
Advice for Same-Sex Couples
To other same-sex couples planning weddings, Kaitlin and Megan recommend expecting the best from people. They were wary of approaching vendors in South Louisiana about working with a lesbian couple, but every single person they worked with was lovely, helpful, and happy to be part of their day…even if they were initially quite confused!
