Modern White Newport Wedding: Kelsey & Leigh
This irresistible wedding at Belle Mer, RI dates back to June 20, 2011, but is stunning and timeless enough that we simply had to share. Our beautiful featured brides, Kelsey and Leigh, travel annually to celebrate their anniversaries, always finding something new and fun to explore together.
Leigh and Kelsey met at Mt. Holyoke College when both joined the springboard diving team for a season. Neither had any previous experience diving, or any real reason to be on the team. In hindsight, they say that fate must have had some hand in their decisions to join.
Kelsey and Leigh had their rings designed together before they became engaged. A poorly disguised secret trip to Cape Cod for a “family reunion” was the perfect setting for the surprise proposal. Kelsey proposed to Leigh in Sandwich, MA where they stayed to celebrate their engagement.
The couple wanted a wedding venue by the water, but not on the beach. They fell in love with Belle Mer when they first saw photos of the property, and even though they visited in the middle of winter, they knew it was the perfect location.
Supported by an amazing team of vendors, Leigh and Kelsey did much of the “grunt work” themselves, designing and printing their own save-the-dates, and paper decorations. Many friends contributed to cutting out endless bird escort cards and fan programs. They also played special roles in the ceremony. Leigh’s parents sang, accompanied by her grandfather on the ukulele. Close friends from church led guests in a hymn, and another wrote a poem that was first publicly spoken during the ceremony.
The most special part of the day was getting to start their lives together surrounded by family and close friends. They most enjoyed getting back to their room at the end of the night after a wonderful, long day, and relaxing alone together.
When Leigh and Kelsey were married, Rhode Island had not yet legalized gay marriage, so they didn’t sign their certificate at the wedding. The next day, when they returned home, their priest “officially” married them in their living room. They had just moved in, so getting married in their home is one of their first memories of moving into their first apartment together!
Asked if they would share any advice with other couples, both suggest getting married on a Monday. The alternative date helped them stay within their budget yet have the wedding of their dreams.
