North Carolina Brides: Janara & Kena

Danrae Babbitt 4

When Janara & Kena told their family and friends, back in 2013, that they would be eloping in Lake Tahoe, they promised they’d also throw a party they could all attend in North Carolina. They kept their word and on May 10, 2014, they celebrated with the enthusiasm, pomp and circumstance of brides who had never walked down the aisle before!

The celebration was held at the Sleepy Hollow Inn & Event Center located in Swannanoa, NC, near Asheville.

Kena serves in the military, and she was recently stationed in Texas, so the brides moved into a new home as newlyweds. Their North Carolina celebration included a Saber Arch, honoring Kena’s service in the air force. One of her seven brothers wrote and performed a song for the brides at the reception. The brides originally met in Tennessee, when Kena was stationed there, through a mutual friend. “I emailed a bunch of friends of my friend, and Janara was the only one who wrote back,” Kena said. It seems the two women have always been on the same wavelength. They both bought engagement rings secretly. When Kena proposed late one night during a camping trip, Janara didn’t reveal that she’d already bought a ring. “I had bought her a ring three months before. She had no idea. I was holding it, I wanted her to have the chance to do it first,” Janara said. Shortly after, she took Kena to dinner and proposed.
