Sentimental and Stylish Belle Mer Wedding: Bobby & Cal
September 11, 2015
Bobby and Cal met in Ptown while on vacation. Bobby was part of a “huge, annoying and straight” bridal party. Cal was with his best gay friend at the time, who Bobby thought was his boyfriend.
Bobby was sitting alone by the pool, so Cal approached him. Neither was looking for love, but when they first met, they both knew. Bobby stayed an extra night to hang out more with Cal and the two have been inseparable ever since.
Cal proposed after just two months! He suffered a major Achilles tendon injury, leaving him in a cast and crutches. He still managed to orchestrate a secret proposal at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, captured by a paparazzi photographer who was in on it. In the end, Cal forgot to ask the question and simply opened the box with the ring and smiled. They remember it as a crazy, beautiful day.
When searching for their venue, Bobby and Cal looked for something near the water with a contemporary feel. The Belle Mer in Newport, Rhode Island was the perfect spot. The venue offered multiple options to customize their day and a wedding planner, Kristen Cambio, who made everything come together. Later, Cal found out that Bobby had always wanted to get married at Belle Mer.
Cal’s mother could not attend all of the events, so Bobby hired a videographer who brought a drone to capture the whole event. The result was a beautiful perspective of the wedding that could be shared with Cal’s mother.
Not to be outdone, Cal hired an improv comedienne to object to the whole wedding in a drunken, Melissa McCarthy way, before the exchange of rings. She arrived in cutoffs, flip flops and a trucker hat at the black tie wedding. Guests were beside themselves and Bobby’s Aunt Terry told her to “just leave.”
In lieu of favors, Cal and Bobby made donations to a foundation Cal is affiliated with called DOROT. Every guest was given a birthday card and asked to fill it out. The cards would be passed out to the elderly when meals are delivered to them.
Traditional rice was replaced by “Taste or Toss the Rainbow.” Each seat had a little pouch of Skittles!
Bobby and Cal shared the following advice for other engaged couples: “Make it your own. Don’t let it become cookie-cutter. Shake it up. Have fun. Make sure you get a video of the whole event so you can view it later. Also, just stick together at all points and be in great communication with each other. We had some family drama and we worked through it all by allowing love to be present. People always say that it’s “your day” and it is, but it is with all the people you love. Happy Planning.”
