Toronto, Ontario Wedding: Mike & Derrick

Julius & James

October 11, 2014

Derrick and Mike met for the first time at a conference in 2008. Although they have a picture together, they were both in different places in life, and didn’t really have a connection. Derrick doesn’t even remember the meeting!

A year later, they met again at a friend’s birthday party. There was definitely a connection this time. They went on their official first date the next day.

Derrick surprised Mike when he proposed in 2012 at a farmhouse bed and breakfast, Cwmtylo, in Bala, Wales.

The grooms chose “Travel” as their theme, and brought it to life. They issued boarding pass invitations for the wedding parties, and passport invitations to the wedding. They gave lounge access passes as table cards, and all of their flowers were made out of road maps. Their tables were named after the places they traveled together. Instead of a seating chart, they had an “airport terminal map”.

Centerpieces were giant hot air balloons floating throughout the room. For their thank you cards, Derrick and Mike sent authentic postcards from their honeymoon. They wanted to ensure their day felt personal and genuine. Even though the guest list was over 200 people, they wanted each and every person to know how much it meant to them, so they created a photo receiving line. Before dinner, each guest had a professional photo take with the grooms against a media wall like one you find on a red carpet. Along with their thank you cards, the grooms sent a copy of each photo to the guest in the picture.

One of their favorite details was providing guests with nametags for cocktail hour. Each tag featured the guest name and a one line explanation of how they new the couple. The tags encouraged guests to mingle and gave them something easy to talk about. At dinner, the tags served as table cards indicating guest dietary requests.
