Tropical Wedding in Hawaii: Alice & Gretchen

Rachel Robertson Photography

Oct. 10, 2015

Gretchen and Alice met at a friend’s wedding. Alice was instantly in love while it took Gretchen about two more months. They were engaged six months later.

Gretchen proposed to Alice by making a hot toddy in a mug that said, “marry me?” at the bottom.

Choosing a destination wedding in Hawaii wasn’t difficult. Alice was dead set on getting married with her toes in the sand. Both wanted a destination wedding and both love Hawaii. It didn’t hurt that Gretchen’s cousin, a wedding planner, and her other cousin, a caterer, both live in Hawaii!

The weekend began with a welcome party for all of their out of town guests at their rented beach house. There were some traditional Hawaiian foods and treats like a shaved ice stand. There was also a traditional Hawaiian band to set the scene. The whole week, though, was basically spent at their house with their closest friends and family.

Guests received customized canvas totes with goodies and a cookbook made of Alice and Gretchen’s favorite recipes. Not wanting them to worry about a favor at the reception, the couple chose to give them out before the welcome party.

Alice’s cousin Alicia and Gretchen’s cousin Joel co-officiated their wedding. He is a pastor and she became ordained on the internet. Together, they represented two families becoming one. Alice and Gretchen’s brothers also served as their best men in lieu of a wedding party. Both love their families individually and were so excited to join them into one.
