Urban Oakland Wedding: Terry & Julia
January 1, 2016
Born and raised in Oakland, California, Terry is extremely proud of her home. She met her bride, Julia, there, and the two own a couple of Oakland businesses, including a café that triples as a retail space and as a queer community space, and a restaurant. All of their roots as a couple, and all of their defining moments happened in Oakland. It was only natural that they would hold their wedding there as well.
Friends and family from all over the world flew in for the event, so Terry and Julia made sure to plan outings leading up to the day of the wedding.
They chose a ceremony venue that highlighted the beautiful Lake Merritt, widely known as the “heart of Oakland” and the Downtown Oakland skyline. Their reception venue offered a look into Oakland’s past as well as a spot for amazing outdoor photos.
Loved ones helped with flower arrangements and decorations, and the couple held a crafting session the day before the wedding where about 20 people attended to help.
The rehearsal dinner was held at their Collective and they rang in the new year with their guests, karaoke-ing the night away.
Terry and Julia enjoyed a harmonious event with their bridal parties, and are grateful that they all hang out even to this day. They all enjoyed the surprise New Orleans brass band that Terry hired to crash the wedding and surprise Julia as a wedding gift! They both love New Orleans so much that they even had their joint bachelorette party there.
The newlyweds highly recommend hiring a great photographer to couples in the midst of their planning now. They felt that was one of the most important investments they made. They also recommend hiring an assertive and passionate planner who understands what you and your partner envision.
They suggest inviting your loved ones and people who have supported you in your relationship without worrying about politics. It’s your day and the guest list is up to you. All the people you love and who love you should naturally meld making for an awesome and fun wedding!
Finally, on the day of, don’t stress! Something will definitely go wrong. At the end of the day, you will be married, and that’s all that really matters.
