[VIDEO]: Couples in Alabama “Finally Married”
Another great video in the NY Times video series; this one featuring a couple who spent the day waiting for a marriage license in Mobile, Alabama.
For Southerners, it’s a big step to go from living quietly in a culture that is not always hospitable to the LGBTQ community to celebrating one’s most personal and private commitment to one another in the form of legal marriage in the public eye.
One can’t help but appreciate the quick clip of the young, straight couple interviewed. They’ve come down to City Hall, ready to exchange vows, and share their thoughts about how folks should be able to choose to do whatever they want, but that they don’t agree with gay marriage. And, says the groom, he’s relieved that their children aren’t there to see this.
When morality is at the center of pro/con arguments about marriage, it’s hard not to appreciate the irony of his comments.
