Bridget & Shelley
I am not the kind of person who usually goes on blind dates but my older sister convinced me to. Thankfully she did. I can’t say it was love at first sight but there was no mistaking the connection between us. We spent two nights endlessy talking on the phone before we ever even met. I knew then something special was going on, but I could never have imagined that it would lead to this. I was akward and geeky on our very first date and when it should have been over she looked at me with those piercing blue eyes and said I don’t want this night to end.
A year later we moved in together. I can’t really say how I knew she was “the one”, I just did. There was this one date where we were just by the ocean at night listening to the waves in the back of her car. Her arms were wrapped around me and she just started to sing to me. I felt my heart skip a beat in a way it never had before. I knew with absolute certainty though the night we were relaxing in the spa. It was so cold that night the steam was rising from the water so thickly you could barely see the other side. At one point I looked up and it cleared for just a moment and shelley was staring at me with such intensity and passion. It took my breath away. I still catch her looking at me like that at times and it still leaves me breathless.
Planning this wedding has actually been very smooth sailing. We are both lucky in the fact that our parents are very supportive of our relationship. My mom even came and looked at venues with us, helped us to choose a cake, sat with all my friends when I was deciding on which dress to buy, and has invited everyone we ever knew to our ceremony. Most couples I know are fortunate if their parents even decide to show up. For us once we gave our families the chance to be a part of things they completely jumped in and helped out. Of course that meant our list of 50 people jumped to 90+ and even a second reception for those that we just couldn’t fit into our Reception Hall.
We chose the Handlery because we found it on a gay-friendly website of vendors and they have been fantastic. They were professional and handled every aspect of our ceremony perfectly. Their garden was in full bloom and even though it was hot outside thay had planned contigencies for everything. Our photographer Cecelia was ecstatic as this is the first gay wedding she has ever been involved with (sometimes I think she is more excited than we are). For our engagement photos she took almost 400 shots of us (our wedding was over 2,500 pictures). We joke that you can flipbook our wedding.
So now things have come to an end or rather a beginning I should say. It could not have been more perfect. Just before I walked out wearing a full length gown (which is crazy for someone who wears baseball caps and shorts all the time) I felt more nervous then I ever have in my entire life. I could barely breathe as the music played and then it was my cue. From there it was like a dream, a fairytale come true. It was simple elegance all the way, and it was so much fun. A blind date that led to marriage….Who would have ever thought?!
Due to the legality of gay marriage in California (FINALLY!!) shelley and I on our anniversary this september will be redoing our vows with some friends and family. We will be “officially” signing our marriage certificate on that day. We could not be happier.
