Debbie & Sally
I wasn’t even looking….I swear. I had just moved back to the US from Australia where I had been living with my first girlfriend and our relationship abruptly came to an end. I wanted to meet people and play the field and didn’t know how to do that, so I decided to go to a gay bar. I had never been to a gay bar. So I asked a woman I met on the internet to take me (as friends) and we went to Debra’s in Long Beach.
And there she was. She smiled and offered to help me get my drink since it was crowded and she was between me and the bar. That smile…that rear end…
Anyway, I knew as soon as she smiled at me that there was something special about her…
She hadn’t even recovered from her divorce when she let her friends from a women’s group talk her into going to a gay bar, not something she had ever done. So she asked if her and her elderly friend could sit at my table. She smiled at me. I know…hard to forget that smile. Anyway, somehow we started talking and talking and really talking…like all night. We realized we lived just down the street from eachother, and decided to meet and walk together for exercise.
She called me the next day…I dont ever give out my number…she never calls strange girls. But I did and she did…
We were going to be just friends…I promise. We hung out for a couple of weeks just talking and being friends. We had decided we were just going to be friends…
Then one afternoon, I met her at her mom’s lounge and Mr. Petrone and Ms. Margarita changed our minds. We left the lounge and went back to where I was house sitting to watch the final episode of “Will and Grace”. We sat a little too close, invaded eachothers personal space, kissed passionately and…the rest is history.
We took things slow…you know. First we were friends, then we were “friends with benefits”, then we were “girlfriends” and after a year of taking it slow, we moved in together.
I dont recall right now the first time she said she wanted to marry me, but she asked me three times in 2 1/2 years and I said yes every time. But the last time she asked me, we went to City Hall in San Diego the next morning and got married on the grass in front of the court house near the water. It was Oct 24, 2008. Just us. Not really the way we discussed, but with the vote approaching (here in California), we decided it was now or…well, NOW!
So we did it. We got married, but we really still want to celebrate our love with our family and friends. So on our one year anniversary, we are having our wedding ceremony with a party to follow so we can declare our love for eachother and seal our covenant in front of all the people we love the most.
Thats our story for now…I guess it is to be continued.
Love InspirationWe inspire eachother. We are inspired by how much God loves us.
